Most Businesses Can’t Survive Any Interruption

A North Bay Business Insurance Update

Have you considered the cost to you if your business had to shut down for a week, month, or even longer?  We have, and we can offer a few tips to help your business continue even in the midst of a shut down.

A North Bay business can be shut down for a number of reasons. Your business or commercial insurance policy will cover the cost to repair or rebuild your building, and replace business property.  But are you protected if it takes time to re-open? Business Interruption Insurance keeps you financially stable during the period that you are forced to vacate.  You can continue to provide your employees with pay, and manage bills during the period in which the business cannot operate.

When considering business income, you also need to determine if you have certain risks that would require specific limits within the overall coverage. If these are not managed correctly, you may suffer a loss and not have enough insurance to ensure your recovery.

Business Income Insurance

  • Peak Season – If your business has seasonal income, you will want to adjust your policy accordingly. Don’t just average your income out over 12 months; that may not be adequate coverage.
  • Period of Recovery – When you consider your recovery time, (the amount of time to fully resume operations) you may need to take into account any special construction needs. For example, you may have unique equipment that will take several months to design and construct. Knowing this will help you design your coverage to meet your needs.
  • Payroll coverage–Under this coverage, you can select who you want to offer payroll continuation to. However, you must do this prior to the loss.  You can also add categories of workers and even managers.

It’s So Hot Out There….The Hot Dogs At AT&T Park Are Actually Hot

BF 3234g

Summer is here, and many people are not accustomed to working and playing in hot temperatures. Heat stress is a signal that says the body is having difficulty maintaining its narrow temperature range. As a North Bay employer, you have an obligation to ensure a safe work place, and the law requires businesses to have Workers’ Compensation Insurance. North Bay Workers’ Compensation insurance can provide the coverage to protect your business from heat stress claims.

What is Heat Stress?

When the body gets hot, the heart pumps faster, blood is diverted from internal organs to the skin, breathing rate increases, and sweating increases, all in an attempt to transfer more heat to the outside air and cool the skin by the evaporation of sweat. If the body can’t keep up, the person suffers effects ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion, and finally to heat stroke.

If the body cannot get rid of excess heat, it will store it. When this happens, the body’s core temperature rises and the heart rate increases.  As the body continues to store heat, the person begins to lose concentration and has difficulty focusing on a task, may become irritable or sick, and often loses the desire to drink. The next stage most often is fainting and even death if the person is not cooled down. The major heat stress injuries and illnesses are heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and then heat stroke.

Take Action

The immediate steps to follow for a heat stroke victim, while waiting for medical personnel to arrive, include:

  • Move the victim to a cooler location.
  • Remove any outer clothing that would interfere with the free circulation of air around the victim’s body.
  • Apply cool water to the entire body surface of the victim. Use ice if necessary.
  • Vigorously fan the victim to increase the cooling effect of the water.
  • Get medical help as soon as possible.

Heat Stress Prevention Tips:

  • Learn the signs and symptoms of heat-induced illnesses and what to do to help.
  • Train the workforce about heat-induced illnesses and how to identify the symptoms.
  • Drink water frequently and moderately.
  • Use the buddy system (work in pairs).
  • Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages. Many cases of heat exhaustion occur the day after a “night on the town”.
  • Eat lightly.
  • Doing more strenuous jobs during the cooler morning hours.
  • Utilize ventilation or fans in enclosed areas.
  • Wear light-colored, cotton clothes and keeping your shirt on. Desert nomads don’t wear all those clothes for nothing!

Big Risks Come In Small Packages

Many think that operating a small North Bay business has little or no risk. The fact is, operating a small business has just about the same risks as any other business.  Employees can still sue you, you can cause injuries to your customers, and your building can burn just like a big business.  General liability risk is very real for small businesses and it is important to have a business insurance program that addresses these issues.

To protect a small business from potential lawsuits, liability insurance is necessary. Policies vary greatly, and they cover different classifications of risks for varying costs.

Commercial General Liability Insurance covers claims from accidents, injuries, or negligence when the business is at fault.  Small businesses may face a wide array of damage charges. Personal injuries, property damage, libel, and slander are just a few examples.

Product Liability Insurance covers legal fees for litigation involving a faulty product.  It also covers any personal or property damage charges caused by the defective product.

Employment Liability Insurance provides protection for an employer against claims made by employees, former employees, or potential employees.  It can cover discrimination (age, sex, race, disability, etc.), wrongful termination of employment, sexual harassment, and other employment-related allegations.

Professional Liability Insurance pays for damages caused by services.  It is also called errors and omissions coverage. This is for companies that market a service instead of a product. For example, professionals in medical clinics must have medical malpractice coverage.

Cyber Liability Insurance covers the risk posed by conducting business over the Internet, over other networks, or using electronic storage technology.  It covers third party losses from hackers, theft, and loss of information including sensitive client or individual personal information.

There are other types of insurance designed for specialty businesses. For example, there are special policies for companies involved only in internet sales.  The nature of the business determines what type of coverage is necessary.
